When to go

October to February is the best window for Colaba, when the sea breeze off Apollo Bunder is at its most pleasant and the Causeway is comfortable to walk for the length of an evening rather than a quick errand. The monsoon, June to September, brings heavy surf and rain along the seafront, and while the Gateway of India and the old bars stay open regardless, the walking that makes Colaba worth choosing over a business hotel further north loses much of its appeal in those months, and the Causeway's hawker stalls thin out considerably.

Rates on Apollo Bunder rise further in December on top of the general wedding-season effect, November to February, since Colaba draws leisure travellers as well as business guests over the holiday period, and a large trade fair at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon can add further pressure across the city even this far south. A visitor able to travel outside December specifically, even within the broader October to February window, should see steadier rates than someone booking over the holiday fortnight itself, and the value band one block inland tends to move less sharply than the grand hotels directly on the seafront.

Getting there and around

From Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International, Colaba is about 22 km away: roughly 45 minutes at 6am and up to 90 minutes at 6pm, reflecting how far south this neighbourhood sits from the airport compared with almost everywhere else in this file. Prepaid taxi counters in arrivals quote roughly ₹800 to ₹950; an app cab typically runs ₹550 to ₹800. Anyone landing in the evening should build the longer transfer time into their plans rather than assume the daytime figure applies, particularly if a same-day meeting is booked straight after arrival.

There is no suburban railway station in Colaba itself — Churchgate on the Western Line is about 2.5 km away, CSMT on the Central and Harbour lines about 3.5 km, both roughly ₹120 by cab. BEST buses run the length of the Causeway to Colaba Bus Station for roughly ₹5 to ₹10 with a Chalo card, a cheap option for a fixed route. Inside the area, walking is the practical way to get around: the Gateway to Colaba Market is about 20 minutes on foot, and Metro Line 3's planned Cuffe Parade extension is not yet open.

Where to stay in Colaba

Sea-facing rooms on P J Ramchandani Marg, known as Apollo Bunder, are the most expensive real estate in this file: expect roughly ₹18,000 to ₹32,000 a night at the grand heritage hotels there, more again in December. This is the address for a visitor who wants the Gateway of India outside the window and has the budget for it, or whose meetings genuinely benefit from the standing of that address. The value band sits one block inland, on Mandlik Road, Best Marg and Nathalal Parekh Marg, where good mid-range doubles run roughly ₹7,000 to ₹12,000 and the walk to the Gateway is still only about six minutes.

Guest houses on Arthur Bunder Road and Henry Road do roughly ₹3,500 to ₹6,000, often with no lift and shared corridors, a reasonable trade for anyone on a tight budget who does not mind carrying their own bags up the stairs. Worth avoiding are rooms with windows directly over the Causeway, where hawker noise and horns run until around 10pm and start again by 7am, and the far southern end near Colaba Market and Sassoon Dock, which the neighbourhood's own notes flag as a weaker choice without giving a specific reason beyond its distance from the main sights.
