Enter off Sassoon Dock Road, south end of the Causeway, between 5.30am and 7am. Trawlers unload pomfret, bombil and prawn onto the concrete and Koli women auction crates in minutes. Photography of the boats is restricted; ask first. Wear shoes you can hose down afterwards.
Elephanta Caves boat from the Gateway
Launches leave the Gateway of India pier roughly every 30 minutes from 9am, last outward boat around 2pm, one hour each way. Return deck ticket is about ₹260, caves entry extra, toy train ₹10. Caves closed Mondays and boats suspended through the monsoon.
Sit in the Afghan Church
St John the Evangelist on Nathalal Parekh Marg, Navy Nagar end, built 1858 for the dead of the First Afghan War. Stained glass, buttressed nave, regimental colours, almost nobody inside. Open mornings and late afternoons; a caretaker will point out the memorial tablets if you ask.
Kebab crawl on Tulloch Road
Bademiya sets up behind the Taj on Tulloch Road after dusk and works to about 2am. Seekh roll ₹180 to ₹260, baida roti larger and messier. Eat standing. Follow it with a lassi at Delhi Darbar on the Causeway, open until roughly 11.30pm.
Buy fixed-price crafts at Cottage Industries
Central Cottage Industries Emporium sits opposite Regal Cinema on Shivaji Maharaj Marg, five floors, price tags, no haggling and no commission agent. Useful sanity check before you negotiate on the Causeway. Open roughly 10am to 7pm; block textiles, Channapatna toys, Kashmiri shawls.
Drink where the city drinks badly and happily
Cafe Mondegar at Metro House, Colaba Causeway, has the Mario Miranda murals and a jukebox; Leopold two minutes south has the bullet marks from 2008. Both are tourist-heavy, both are institutions. Beer ₹400 to ₹500. For quiet, the Harbour Bar inside the Taj instead.
What Colaba is like on the ground
For business travel this is the strongest walkable base in south Mumbai. The Bombay Stock Exchange on Dalal Street is a 15 to 20 minute walk, Nariman Point is 10 minutes by cab, and the law firms and banks of Fort and Ballard Estate are all reachable without ever booking a car — the single most useful sustainability decision you can make in this city. Consulates, the Yacht Club and most heritage venues are inside the same radius. Colaba suits a traveller with a three-day southern schedule and a taste for old buildings.

Where to stay, and what it costs
Sea-facing rooms on P J Ramchandani Marg (Apollo Bunder) are the most expensive real estate in the file — expect ₹18,000 to ₹32,000 a night at the Taj Mahal Palace and its neighbours, more during December. The value band sits one block inland on Mandlik Road, Best Marg and Nathalal Parekh Marg, where good mid-range doubles run ₹7,000 to ₹12,000 and you still walk to the Gateway in six minutes. Guest houses on Arthur Bunder Road and Henry Road do ₹3,500 to ₹6,000, often with no lift and shared corridors. Avoid rooms with windows directly over the Causeway: hawker noise and horns run until 10pm and start again at 7am. Avoid the far southern end near Colaba Market and Sassoon Dock in the mornings unless the smell of a working fish dock is neutral to you.
Getting in and out
From Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International, Colaba is about 22 km: 45 minutes at 6am, 90 minutes at 6pm. Prepaid taxi counters in arrivals quote roughly ₹800 to ₹950; an app cab is ₹550 to ₹800. There is no suburban railway station in Colaba — Churchgate on the Western Line is 2.5 km, CSMT on the Central and Harbour lines 3.5 km, both about ₹120 by cab. BEST buses run the length of the Causeway to Colaba Bus Station for ₹5 to ₹10 with a Chalo card. Inside the area, walk: the Gateway to Colaba Market is 20 minutes. Metro Line 3 will eventually reach Cuffe Parade but that station is not open.
One more thing
Skip it if your meetings are in BKC, Andheri East or Powai. The drive north is 45 to 90 minutes each way depending on the Sea Link and the Worli bottleneck, and you will spend your working week in a Toyota. Also treat the Gateway forecourt with suspicion: the men offering harbour launch rides, instant photographs or a shortcut to a friend's gem showroom all work on commission. Elephanta boat tickets are sold at the official counters on the pier, priced and printed, and nowhere else.
