Why people stay in Mahim
Mahim is the hinge of Mumbai. The causeway across the creek — built in 1845 with money left by Lady Avabai Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, whose name is still on the road — was the thing that physically joined the old island city to Bandra and everything north of it. Cross it today and you go from ₹32,000-a-month rents to ₹90,000 in about four hundred metres. Almost nobody puts Mahim on a Mumbai itinerary, which is precisely why a decent air-conditioned double here still costs ₹2,800 to ₹4,500 when Bandra West is asking three times that.
The Metro Line 3 station is called Shitaladevi Temple and it sits on Senapati Bapat Marg, which quietly makes Mahim one of the better-connected cheap bases in the city. BKC is two stops. The domestic and international terminals are on the same line. Mahim Junction on the surface serves both the Western and the Harbour lines, so Vashi and Panvel in Navi Mumbai are a direct train. For a traveller doing site visits across the eastern suburbs and Navi Mumbai on the same trip, that combination is hard to beat at the price.

Ride the Harbour Line to Navi Mumbai
Mahim Junction is on both the Western and Harbour lines, so you can board here for Vashi and Panvel without going into town first. Second class to Vashi costs around ₹15 and takes 50 minutes. Avoid 8am to 10.30am northbound and 6pm to 8.30pm southbound unless you enjoy being carried by a crowd.

Where to stay, and what it costs
The usable stock is on Lady Jamshedji Road and the lanes off Mori Road, both on the west side, five to ten minutes' walk from Mahim Junction. Expect ₹2,800 to ₹4,500 for a clean AC double with breakfast; ₹6,000 buys you the top of the market here and that is a business hotel near the Hinduja Hospital end of Veer Savarkar Marg, which is also the most useful address if you have early Coastal Road runs into town. Avoid anything advertised as being on the causeway itself — the traffic noise on Mahim Causeway runs from 5am to well past midnight and the buildings are old enough that the windows do nothing. Avoid the strip immediately behind Mahim station on the east side too; it is close to the Dharavi edge, perfectly safe by day, but poorly lit and confusing after dark. Ask for an upper floor facing away from Senapati Bapat Marg.
Getting in and out
Metro Line 3 runs from both airport terminals to Shitaladevi Temple station on Senapati Bapat Marg in around 30 minutes for roughly ₹60 — far and away the best arrival. A taxi is ₹550 to ₹800 and 40 to 80 minutes. From Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus take a Harbour Line train, or from Churchgate a slow Western Line local to Mahim Junction, both about 25 minutes for ₹10 in second class. Inside Mahim, walk: the causeway, dargah, church and station are within a kilometre of each other. Autos operate freely here because Mahim is the first stop north of the auto boundary, ₹26 flag-down; south of the causeway you need a taxi.
One more thing
Skip Mahim if you want a view, a pool or a restaurant scene — there is essentially none of the last, and the beach is where the Mithi River empties, so treat it as a place to stand rather than swim. Come instead for Maharashtra Nature Park, thirty-seven acres of dense forest grown on top of a closed municipal rubbish dump on the Sion-Bandra Link Road, which is the single most persuasive sustainability story in Mumbai and takes an hour to walk.
